Getting bored of the local links? Planning on golfing for your next trip away? Here are 5 courses that are among the finest on the globe; from Ryder Cup hosts to ultra-exclusive private members clubs, these tees need to be on your golfing bucket list.
BRITAIN: ST. ANDREWS, THE OLD COURSE
Acknowledged as the oldest course in the world, the old course at St Andrews, Scotland, is the spiritual home of the game. Shaped by Mother Nature, the Swilcan Bridge and Hell Bunker are recognised by golfers across the world. A true links, it’s not as smooth as the television makes out and presents a challenge for even the most seasoned player, best of all it’s open to the public, despite it’s iconic status.
CONTINENTAL EUROPE: REAL CLUB VALDERRAMA – SPAIN
Host to the famed 1997 Ryder Cup, Valderrama is seen as one of the best courses in the world let alone Europe. In June last year, Valderrama was granted royal status by King Juan Carlos of Spain, and the course in conjunction with the private members club, make this property fit for royalty. Open to the public, although not the cheapest green-fee in Europe, naturally, it’s well worth the outlay for the 17th hole alone.
AMERICAS: PINE VALLEY – NEW JERSEY
Held up as the pinnacle of golfing architecture, Pine Valley is highly exclusive, and only those invited and accompanied by a member are allowed into the club. Despite, not playing host to any major tournaments, Pine Valley is heralded as one of the world’s ultimate courses. Consistently difficult throughout, those who have played reinforce the stratospheric plaudits.
AFRICA: YAS LINKS – UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
The very first links in the Middle East region, the course on Yas Island, which also features the Formula 1 Grand Prix track, is stunningly beautiful and that’s not just the greens but the scenery also. Kyle Philips, a leading golf course designer, was involved from concept to finish and the coastal course is as treacherous as it is breath-taking,
AFRICA: LEOPARD ROCK – ZIMBABWE
Situated beneath Leopard Rock in Zimbabwe’s Bvumba mountains, the spectacular views alone make one this one a must-play. Nicely placed within an elegant estate, the Peter Matkovich-designed course has been enjoyed by celebrities and royalty alike since the first ball in 1993.
