Choosing a film to watch with a girl you’ve just started seeing is a tricky business – you can’t put on anything gory, scary or violent, you can’t risk the awkwardness of an overtly sexual film and science fiction – forget about it. But don’t worry, you don’t have to silently suffer through Sex and City, here are the five best films to watch with a date (that you’ll enjoy too!).
JERRY MAGUIRE (1996)
Tom Cruise was at the height of his fame when Jerry Maguire was released and the film was a box office smash. Cruise plays a bedazzling sports agent who gets fired from his firm and attempts to go it alone, he splits up with his fiancé and gets involved with single mother Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger). The film is a perfect mix of sports (for you) and romance (for the girl) and therefore is a great date-night movie.
THE NEW WORLD (2005)
Terrence Malick’s The New World is considered, by those in the know, to be one of the best films of the last decade. Christian Bale and Colin Farrell play 17th century English explorers in this mesmerising retelling of the Pocahontas myth. It’s an epic historical drama, but also highly poetic. Show this film to any girl and they’ll see you as sweet, smart and sensitive.
HIGH FIDELITY (2000)
Based on Nick Hornby’s 1995 book of the same name, High Fidelity was critically acclaimed. The film follows record store owner John Cusack who, breaking down the fourth wall, tells the viewer about his various issues with women and relationships that haven’t worked. A great film with great music that’s focused on relationships – but not in that horribly soppy way.
INTOLERABLE CRUELTY (2003)
This is a rom-com like no other. For starters it’s directed by the legendary Coen brothers who are widely considered to be amongst the finest directors working today. The plot follows warring divorce lawyers, played by George Clooney and Catherine Zeta Jones, who start to fall in love despite their professional rivalry. Hilarious and darkly comic.
GOSFORD PARK (2001)
Gosford Park is a delightful social drama-cum-murder mystery. Set in a country house in England in the 1920s, high society from Britain and America fight, dance and flirt over one weekend before one of the guests meets his grizzly end. The film stars an ensemble cast and will delight any female viewer due to the similarities with Downton Abbey and the fine costumes. Whilst you will hopefully enjoy the mystery and atmospheric suspense.
