Words: Guy Aubrey Devito
When James Bond isn’t making wisecracks, seducing ravishing, exotic women or drinking vodka martinis he can usually be seen warring with baddies. These have come in a variety of shapes and sizes over the years and some have been truly villainous – while some have been downright laughable. We’ve ranked the five best villains here, just don’t expect to see Jaws (he turns good in the end!)
5. TEE HEE – LIVE AND LET DIE
This one-armed Caribbean maniac had his arm bitten off by a crocodile called Albert – his response? To attach a steel pincer to where his arm was and wreak his vengeance upon the world. He does enjoy a good chuckle though as his name suggests…
4. MR WINT AND MR KIDD – DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
Mr Wint and Mr Kidd are one of the oddest couples in cinema, they get their jollies from killing people together and completing each others sentences. Although they’re hilarious to watch, they must have set back the gay rights movement by a fair few years.
3. FRANCISCO SCARAMANGA – THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
Christopher Lee’s Scaramanga is one of the most famous villains in cinema history and is unnerving and charming at the same time. He takes great pleasure in his work as a professional assassin and is a formidable antagonist for James Bond.
2. RED GRANT – FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
Donald ‘Red’ Grant is a blond, Irish psychopath who apparently escaped from Dartmoor Prison and joined SPECTRE as a way to get paid for his murderous bloodlust. He tries to impersonate a British agent in order to gain Bond’s trust, but 007 gets suspicious when he orders red wine with fish.
1. ERNST STAVRO BLOFELD
SPECTRE’s Blofeld is easily the most recognisable Bond villain, and perhaps the most recognisable villain in the whole of cinema. In total he appears in six official Bond films and is often seen stroking his white cat. Blofeld and Irma Bunt kill Bond’s wife in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, making him the most reprehensible Bond villain.
