5 apps that will sort your life out

Some might say that the assumption an app has life changing qualities is beyond preposterous – but iOS and Android addicts swear by certain apps. Here are five that will sort your life out.

SLEEP CYCLE – IOS, ANDROID

app - tgj 05

This nifty little app monitors the amount of useful or ‘REM’ sleep that you get at night. So many of us hit the hay at a decent time and yet wake up tired – more often than not this is due to a lack of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep paired with the fact that our alarm has woken us up in a period of deep sleep as opposed to light sleep. Sleep Cycle monitors how disrupted your sleep has been during the night and will wake you up within a 30 minute time frame in the morning, when you’re sleeping lightly.

FOURSQUARE – IOS, ANDROID

app - 02

Foursquare is an essential urban app that informs you of the best places to go within a district or area. You inform the app of what you like, be it Italian coffee or French baking and the app will direct you to the pertinent retailers within the vicinity. You can also rely on community answers to make a judgement on where to go and what to do. The app is well programmed too; it won’t recommend breakfast places if it’s past 03:00 pm – nor will it recommend clubbing at lunchtime!

CONCENTRATE – MAC

app - tgj.01

A must-have for the perennial Mac user, Concentrate essentially blocks out all of those irritating distractions that prevent us from knuckling down and well… concentrating. Available only on Apple computers, Concentrate strips the desktop down to its bear basics; distracting sites can be temporarily blocked, a timer to monitor your progress can be set up and sound prompts can be set to remind you of certain tasks. A great app for those days where you simply must get things done.

LUMOSITY – IOS, ANDROID, THE WORLD WIDE WEB

app - tgj 03

The brain training app has been downloaded over 10 million times and is one of the most popular educational apps on the App Store. What better way to get yourself in tip-top mental condition than by playing games that test your memory, attention, flexibility and problem solving abilities. Although the effectiveness of using Lumosity is so far inconclusive, many scientists have stated that it can help cognitive function.

MOVES – IOS, ANDROID

, Moves records your movement throughout the day – and crucially those moves that you make walking, running and cycling. Moves calculates how many steps you’ve made, as well as the calories you’ve burnt, the distance you’ve travelled and the duration you’ve been moving for. By identifying how much natural movement that you’ve partaken in during one day, you can look at ways of increasing your ‘organic movement’, thereby leading a healthier life.
