3 Reasons You’re Not Getting The Promotion You Deserve
Words: Alex Woodhall
Getting that all-elusive promotion isn’t always so straightforward, no matter how much you actually warrant it. Standing out from the crowd, even if you’re absolutely killing it professionally, can be a tricky task and even then, it’s not always enough to convince your boss to give you that deserved pay rise.
To make the endeavour that bit easier, ensure you’re not making any of these common mistakes, oversights that are potentially holding you and your career back.
MAKE YOUR EFFORTS KNOWN
No one likes a bragger, it gets tiresome after a short while, but highlighting all the extra work you’re completing could be the trick to taking your long awaited step up the ladder.
Let your boss know, in a relatively subtle manner, about the extra jobs you’re getting done during the week alongside your usual duties. Keep it consistent and it wont be long before that new contract follows. It’s never a bad idea to let those above you how keen you are to move up either; just don’t be too forceful or demanding when emphasising this.
FAILING TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH CO-WORKERS
It’s all well and good schmoozing your boss but if you’re not in a good place with the rest of the office, your chances of promotion are likely being hampered. Your boss is probably taking note of how well you interact with those around you, and a good relationship with those at your level and below could well be the answer to that extra responsibility.
After all, these people are going to still be working with you, or possibly for you, so their input is essential in facilitating that promotion you’ve been gunning for.
NOT NETWORKING
Making and maintaining a wide range of contacts is essential to advancing your career. If you’re stagnating at your current job, despite how well you’re doing, it may be time to explore and be open to opportunities elsewhere. Something you wont be able to do if you don’t know anyone. Obviously, openly flaunting your discontent is a sure fire way to the sack; be discreet and keep your ears to the ground over potential career paths elsewhere.
