The thing about fast cars is that they’re not very practical. Just try pottering around town in a low-slung sports car; speed bumps are a constant threat, you can only (realistically) carry one passenger, and boot space is often minimal. This is where performance estate cars come in though, as they offer all of the excitement and thrills of a sports car with the added benefit of leg room and ground clearance. MERCEDES-BENZ C63 S AMG
The smallest estate-package Mercedes offer is the C-Class, which makes it an enticing proposition. The range-topping AMG C63 S’ all-new 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 is far from pokey though, featuring 510bhp and, perhaps more impressively, 700NM of torque, which is enough to propel it from 0-60mph in just 4.1 seconds. With its sophisticated chassis and AMG Ride Control suspension though, the C63 S is a comfortable cruiser – perfect for long distances.

AUDI RS6
There’s a reason Audi’s RS6 line has remained so popular for so long, particularly in Avant form. Its combination of lightening-quick performance and everyday usability is unbeatable, and thanks to its four-wheel drive Quatrro system it can genuinely be driven anywhere and everywhere. Whilst it’s far from economical – its 4.0-litre turbo-charged, 560bhp V8 puts an end to that dream – it’s pretty much the only car you’ll ever need.

Although more of a shooting break than an estate (what’s the difference anyway?), the Ferrari FF has changed the automotive landscape forever. The first-ever four-wheel drive car to come out of Maranello, the FF is the marque’s most versatile machine ever, yet its roaring 651bhp V12 ensures it remains as evocative as any other Ferrari on the market. It’s also blisteringly quick, soaring to 60mph from standstill in 3.7 seconds and topping out at 208mph.
