Review: 1:54 Art Fair

Words: Nina HG

Europe’s leading Contemporary African Art Fair – 1:54 returned for its second edition at Somerset House this past October. The fair secured its reputation as a leading platform for artists, galleries and curators, dedicated to promoting African art practices and projects.

The fair, which ran for five days, enjoyed enormous success both commercially as well as critically. 1:54’s position during London’s Frieze week proved hugely advantageous and that they were able to attract a large and diversified audience eager to explore the rapidly emerging Contemporary African art market.

This year’s highlights included a site-specific installation designed by Hassan Hajjaj as well as outstanding works by Boris Nzebo and Paul Ondwit. The success of the fair is likely to have a hugely positive impact on the reception and status of Contemporary African Art internationally.
