Today is the 10th anniversary of Facebook, the site that has not only completely changed the face of social media but has re-written the way we interact as people in the 21st century. Of course, with this momentous milestone comes an onslaught of scepticism about how much longer Facebook will be on top, will it reach its 11th birthday still reigning supreme? This remains to be seen, but in the meantime, here are some weird and wonderful facts you might not know about the social network that has dominated our lives for the best part of a decade.
BLUE IS THE HUE
The reason for the blue dominance of Facebook isn’t random, it is because of Mark Zuckerberg’s red-green colour blindness. He sees blue the best which is why he chose it.
MAD ABOUT AL
On the original Facebook page there was a picture of a man, nicknamed ‘Facebook guy’, in the right hand corner. It was recently unveiled that this was actually a photo of Al Pacino.
CODING
If you type in @[4:0] into the comment box and click enter, Mark Zuckerberg’s name will appear.
PIRATE FACEBOOK
You can select ‘Pirate mode’ in the language settings. Your Facebook page will then be filled with phrases such as ‘Home Port’, ‘Bottle o Messages’ and ‘Abandon Ship’.
RECORD BREAKER
On 30th March 2013, the record was set by the Guru Shri Rajendraji Maharaj Jaap Club (India) for the most comments ever (according to the Guinness Book of Records). The total was a massive 15,626,405.
FIGURE IT OUT
1.23 billion people (1/6 of the world’s population) were active on Facebook by the end of 2013.
ENTREPRENEUR
Steve Chen, an internet entrepreneur, was employed at Facebook for just a few months before he left to set up his own business. This business was YouTube.

Mark Zuckerberg wears the same Facebook grey t-shirt everyday because it saves him time in the morning.
FILM CRITIC
When The Social Network came out Zuckerberg took a small group to see it. He later critisised his portrayal in the film as someone who was driven by the desire to improve his social status.
A BUNCH OF BILLIONAIRES
Facebook has made a lot of money for a lot of people but there are five that have become billionaires; co-founders Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, its first president Sean Parker and Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.
