10 steps to nailing a job interview

With another new intake of graduates about to flood London, competition in the job market has never been fiercer. Carpe diem, gentlemen. Best foot forward and game face on – it’s time to plan your attack on the careers ladder. Interviews require commitment, discipline and determination. As with anything, proper planning and preparation prevents piss poor performance. Even if the worst comes to the worst, it’s all good experience. Cheerfulness in the face of adversity and all that. Here are 10 essential steps to help you land your dream job.

DRESS TO IMPRESS – BE PROFESSIONAL

This is your chance to make a good first impression and to stand out from the crowd.

SHOW OFF WITH YOUR CV

Detail your education, highlight your strengths, include quality references.

Know your CV and application inside out and back to front.

BACKGROUND CHECKS

Clean-up your online presence – especially on social media.

DON’T BE LATE

Punctuality is key. Arrive early, relax, observe and absorb.

When you leave, ask about next steps.

DON’T JUST BRING YOURSELF

Arm yourself with pen, paper, CV, a winning smile…

TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES

This could be a bumpy ride… but it won’t be if you remember to put Happn on silent.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT – DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Know your strengths and weaknesses.

Prepare answers to those more obvious questions, but don’t become contrived.

Arrive with questions of your own.

MIND YOUR Ps & Qs

The interview begins as soon as you walk through the door.

Everyone matters, from intern to CEO.

Stand until asked to sit and always let the interviewer sit down first.

Write thanking all those that you met for their time. Overkill is a good thing.

BODY LANGUAGE – MAKE YOUR MARK

Firm handshake, look the employer in the eye, sit up straight.

DEMEANOUR – SHOW YOUR TRUE COLOURS

Steel your mind. Exude confidence – sell yourself.

Do not interrupt or waffle – keep answers short and sweet.
