10 Reasons Why Americans Love A British Gentleman
Words: Alex Woodhall
The pull of a British gentleman, all sophistication and style, knows no bounds. And it’s well-documented that those across the pond can’t help but love one. But why is that? What powers do those on this side of the Atlantic have that maintain this special relationship? Here are 10 reasons for the ongoing magnetism:
The accent
It’s incredibly clichéd but the truth is, Americans love an authentic British accent. You could blame Hollywood for this – after all, movie after movie has trained Americans to think that those speaking with a British accent are particularly classy and smart (villains especially). Or you could just accept that, actually, the English language does objectively sound ‘sexier’ with extra-strong t’s and hardly-pronounced r’s.
The British sense of chivalry
Their famed gentlemanly acts of chivalry give Brits a big edge when it comes to courting an American. Again, where does this notion come from? From movies, sure, but also from literature and stories from historical records (dames and noblemen, knights in shining armour, etc). Is this true for Brits across the board? Definitely not. But chances are, when an American pictures a British person, it’s more Galahad than Ali G.
The fact that Brits are oh-so-polite
British gents are largely perceived by Americans to be prim, proper and, above all, polite. There’s probably no need for a Downton re-enactment, but good manners will absolutely get you far in the former colony. Just remember to use the holy trinity of British politeness: “please”, “thank you” and “sorry”, ideally injected at every possible occasion.
The infectious charm
Alongside the accent, a British gentleman’s suave sweet-talking skills guarantees success when over in the States. Brits seem to do this particularly well, combining their delightful sense of wordplay with self-deprecating humour and wit.
The James Bond connection
007 is a global phenomenon, beloved by millions everywhere. It has also handed the British a long-standing reputation for being charming, dangerous and mysterious. This heady combination gives them a distinct leg-up in the Land of Liberty, but it isn’t that hard to ape – a sharp tux, a good bow tie and a shaken-not-stirred martini in your hand, and you’re halfway there already.
The famous British wit
Being a true gentleman, some good-natured jokes will go down a treat, even if you’re not known for it at home. Perception is reality, after all, and the British have a reputation for being the wittiest in the world. From Oscar Wilde to Stephen Fry to Ricky Gervais, there’s no shortage of smart, jocular Brits for Americans to take inspiration from.
The romantic comedies
It’s not just Bond – Brits can also thank their Colin Firths and Hugh Grants for giving them a loveable reputation in the States. While their awkward and bumbling on-screen shenanigans probably won’t work in all real-life scenarios, some scattered “umm”s here and expressions of innocent bafflement there should work up a bit of that famous charm.
Subtlety over brashness
In contrast to their American counterparts, Brits are known for being more subtle and humble in everything they say and do. This, in a way, often makes the British gentleman come across as more worldly and intelligent, more ‘refined’. As they say, true style never shouts.
The mopey pessimism (yes, really)
The British default of restrained-cynicism and solemnity is often seen as heart-warming and refreshing in a country where everything is over the top and unendingly cheerful. This difference has yet to dampen the Anglo-American relationship; in fact, it’s much the opposite. Americans seeking a bit more ‘authenticity’ in life often just need to look across the pond. And on a similar note…
The sincerity
Similar to the inherent subtlety and pessimism, the projection of genuine sincerity that seems to be inbuilt in British people is almost infectious to American acquaintances. Unable to take a compliment with nothing but a wobbly smile and a “thank you”, as opposed to arrogance and an elaborate story, is a welcome change to many an American. To be a true gentleman, after all, one should focus on the ‘true’.
