10 Most Exciting Videogames of 2014

Words: Violet

It’s a new year and a new console generation, and while none of the big names have navigated their hardware launches totally unscathed, there are plenty of great titles on the horizon to keep gamers onside.

From fresh instalments in big franchises to awesome new IPs, here are the ten most anticipated videogames due to drop this year…

Dark Souls II

If there’s one franchise with the power to consistently reduce hardcore gamers to gibbering wrecks, it’s Dark Souls. The sequel’s due in March, so you’d better stock up on diazepam and calendar in some counselling.

Destiny

Bungie’s new killer-app has been riding the hype train for months now, but we’ll have to wait until September to see if this MMO-cum-FPS space opera lives up to expectations.,

The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online- TGJ.01

Skyrim represented the absolute pinnacle of Bethesda’s open-world RPG franchise, leaving just one last avenue to explore: online multiplayer. Whet that broadsword and stock up on spell books, the wide plains of Tamriel await in June…, Mario Kart 8

mario - TGJ.01

Cheaters everywhere will be blue-shelling deserved winners in glorious HD when Nintendo releases the latest Mario Kart in Q2. This entry will up the game by combining the airborne and underwater racing elements from its predecessor with Mario Galaxy-esque gravity-bending., Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2- TGJ.01

This Wii U exclusive puts you back in the ten-inch stilettos of Bayonetta: the feisty witch with lethal hair extensions and a gun for every limb. The last game made Devil May Cry look like a table-top RPG, so expect even more frenetic action from the sequel.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid V- TGJ.01

Sigh. It might not be quite the same without David Hayter – and I’m still not sure whether Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are supposed to be separate releases or two parts of the same game – but I can never resist a new Metal Gear. The details may be obscured in mystery, but we’re confident that Hideo Kojima has a few secrets hidden up his sleeves., Super Smash Bros. U

Super Smash Bros. U- TGJ.01

Brawl was one of my all-time favourite games of the last generation, and the introduction of Mega Man guarantees Super Smash Bros. U automatic entry to my 2014 wish-list. Hopefully they’ve axed the crummy campaign mode., Thief

theif- TGJ.01

Seminal kleptomania-simulator, Thief, returns in 2014. Once again you’ll be taking on the role of hooded master burglar, Garett, as you pilfer your way through a steampunk dystopia., Watch Dogs

watchdogs- TGJ.01

The second all-new title on this list, Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs is certainly an intriguing prospect. As super-spy/computer hacker Aiden Pierce, players must exploit the technology of a futuristic Chicago to progress. By manipulating transport, seizing electronic utilities and tapping into a vast surveillance network you will be able to get the leg up on your foes.,

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - TGJ.01

Finally, Geralt will return in the final chapter the Witcher series this year. Very little information currently exists about Wild Hunt, other than it reportedly boasts 50+ hours of content and 36 possible endings based on players’ actions throughout the entire series.
