10 best songs of 2014
Words: Guy Aubrey Devito
Whether you love or hate the contemporary music scene, it’s hard to deny that there have been some exceptional songs released this year – here are the 10 best songs of 2014.
10. ‘HAPPY’ – PHARRELL WILLIAMS
Although released in late 2013, Williams’ song was certainly a 2014 hit.
9. ‘WALKING WITH ELEPHANTS’ – TEN WALLS
A great club anthem, like those we were so often treated to in the 90’s and early 2000’s.
8. ‘SLEEP LIKE A BABY TONIGHT’ – U2
Although everybody hated them for ‘download-gate’ Sleep Like a Baby Tonight was a great, heartfelt song.
7. ‘LUNA’ – BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB
The indie rockers gave us a number of great songs during 2014 and this was our favourite.
6. ‘LOVE NEVER FELT SO GOOD’ (ORIGINAL) – MICHAEL JACKSON
This new release from the King of Pop proves that his music lives on.
5. ‘I ONLY FUCKED YOU AS A JOKE’ – CHILDBIRTH
Seattle’s grudge scene lives on in the form of this feminist punk band – funny and decent.
4. ‘ANACONDA’ – NIKKI MINAJ
Anaconda was less of a pop song and more of a cultural phenomenon, entertaining song, entertaining video.
3. ‘ALL ABOUT THAT BASS’ – MEGHAN TRAINOR
Like Anaconda, All About That Bass was a song that somehow encapsulated the zeitgeist of our time – preposterous but hypnotic.
2. ‘LOVERS ON THE SUN’ – DAVID GUETTA
David Guetta’s Spaghetti Western score inspired song recieved such a positive commercial response that it has to be included in the top ten.
1. ‘RESERVOIR’ – METRONOMY
Although Metronomy seem to want to be considered this era’s Talking Heads, they still have a lot of work to do – they are capable of producing decent, cerebral songs which do well commercially and are a bright light in a very weak musical age.
