One of the greatest things about Christmas are the heartwarming Christmas films. There’s nothing like relaxing with a glass of sherry and putting on a seasonal classic. With so many films to choose from, it’s hard to limit ourselves to just 10 – but we’ve managed it. Here are the 10 best Christmas films of all time.
10. EDWARD SISSORHANDS (1990)
One of Tim Burton’s best films; obscure, fascinating and heartwarming all at once.
9. DIE HARD 2 (1990)
In this boy’s classic John McClane – aka Bruce Willis – battles baddies trying to take over Washington Dulles International Airport on Christmas Eve.
8. TRADING PLACES (1983)
In this modern take on The Prince and the Pauper a company director (Dan Aykroyd) and a street hustler (Eddie Murphy) switch places with hilarious consequences.
7. IN BRUGES (2008)
This tragicomic film is a relatively unknown Christmas cracker! Well worth worth a watch.
6. GREMLINS (1984)
In this horror comedy a father buys an obscure Chinese creature as a Christmas present for his son. Unfortunately the ‘gremlin’ ends up causing a lot of trouble for the family…
5. LETHAL WEAPON (1987)
In this buddy cop movie two cops – a manic depressive (Mel Gibson) and a family man (Danny Glover) – are partnered together. Despite their initial differences they become friends and battle against heroin smugglers before Christmas.
4. BAD SANTA (2003)
Bad Santa is roaring fun and is a great, silly Christmas movie starring Billy Bob Thornton as a criminal who dresses up as Santa Claus in order to rob shopping malls.
3. SCROOGED (1988)
This modern retelling of A Christmas Carol starring Bill Murray is terrific, light-hearted entertainment, peppered with references to Ghostbusters (due to Bill Murray meeting ghosts again).
2. NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION (1989)
This film ticks all the boxes for what should be in a Christmas film and is fun for all the family and funny on every level.
1. ELF (2003)
Will Ferrell’s first lead role propelled him to international stardom and Elf is now one of the most beloved Christmas films of all time.
